destination:
Cliffhanger '09, Sheffield
when:
12 July 09
This was our first trip to Cliffhanger - we know, where
have we been all this time...
Well, having read about it before and not being able to
go, this year we decided it was about time. Also Pirie
was up for qualifying so we had to go and make sure he
was fed and watered for the day.
We were very happy when we rocked up on Saturday
afternoon, It was as if we had found Sheffield's secret
garden for climber's, that came with a great menu and
free to watch awesome climbing thrown in.
Things to do as far as the eye could see, even scuba
diving was an option. After a tour around the site and
picking up some Chinese food we headed on over to The
Tent. Full to the edge of it's canopy the tent was a
hive of activity; qualifying for the BBC's on the main
stage, a free one hour master class with Steve McClure
in conjunction with the Climbing Works, Sheffield,
available to all who signed up, and the dyno competition
which recorded 2.90m by the events end on the Sunday.
It was a very early start Sunday morning as Pirie was
due to be qualifying from 9am. Using the problems from
the Junior's Final's, both Adult Male and Female took to
the stage to test their metal.
Seeing as this was Pirie's first time at the BBC's and
first main competition we couldn't have asked for more
from him. He is looking very strong for next year's
event and we know that we will be seeing much more from
him as he continues to push himself harder every time.
It is official, watching amazing climbers on super
technical and powerful routes is addictive. Some of the
skill on display, especially from the younger ones was
more than impressive. It was great to see so many
raising the bar and remaining so passionate about the
sport.
